Apple Can Read Your Encrypted Messages

February 1, 2016

You should probably think twice about using any cloud provider service where you don't define the encryption key. Apple's iCloud is a good example of what not to use unless you don't care about someone else accessing your data. As SC Magazine reported, when Apple stores the backup in encrypted form, it uses its own key. If a user enables iCloud Backup on their Apple device, copies of all messages, photographs and data including iMessages are encrypted on iCloud using a key controlled by Apple and not the user. Synchronization with iCloud is on by default. A better solution is to turn off everything dealing with iCloud except Find My iPhone and backup your data to your own computer using iTunes.
