Search is Coming to the Wayback Machine
October 28, 2015
Many folks know the archive of the Internet is also known as the Wayback Machine. It is hosted at archive.org and takes periodic snapshots of websites, attempting to create a massive archive of the Internet. This means you can go back in time to see how a website looked in the past. Sometimes it’s pretty funny to go back several years and see how many sites were using animated GIFs on their home pages. The Wayback Machine is a wonderful tool, but you need to know the exact domain name to retrieve the historical views. That is going to change. The Laura and John Arnold Foundation is donating $1.9 million to provide a search engine for the Wayback Machine. The search capability is planned to be available sometime in 2017.
