Will Windows 10 Really Be Free?

March 25, 2015

Microsoft wants everyone to be running Windows 10. So much so that it recently announced that Windows 10 upgrades would be free for anyone running Windows 7 or 8.1 – even pirated copies. Is that really going to happen? Who knows? ZDNet has an excellent article that tries to clarify what a “free” Windows 10 upgrade means. The original announcment stated that “customers” would get the free upgrade. Customers would tend to mean business users and not “consumers,” which would mean home users.

Microsoft has since issued a statement clarifying which editions of Windows are excluded from the free upgrade. Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise and Windows RT/RT 8.1 are excluded. But what about the versions of Windows that use Pro or Professional in the name? Hopefully we’ll get even more clarification as we get closer to the actual release date. One thing we do know is that Windows 10 will not be free for everyone.
