Yahoo Jumping on the Encryption Bandwagon

August 11, 2014

The Washington Post reported that Yahoo is taking a page out of Google’s playbook by announcing end-to-end encryption capabilities, expected to be available in 2015. You may recall that back in June, Google released a Chrome extension that provides end-to-end encryption for Gmail users. The Yahoo announcement will bring the same capabilities to Yahoo webmail. Yahoo is also working with Google to make sure its implementation is compatible with Gmail’s.

End-to-end encryption is another step to keep prying eyes (such as the NSA) out of the information stream. Think of it as a secure, encrypted channel between two points. It’s a good thing that more and more vendors are providing encryption solutions for data storage and transfer.
