Another Facebook Leak Leaves 533 Million Users’ Personal Data Exposed

April 6, 2021

Business Insider released an article explaining that the personal data belonging to 533 million Facebook users has been leaked online, which contains information such as a user’s phone number, full name, birthday, email address, and biography. Cybersecurity experts are now concerned about the possibility of future social engineering attempts, scamming, and hacking that may occur as a result.

Anyone familiar with Facebook’s past is aware that this isn’t the first time personal data has been leaked by the social networking company. In 2019, a vulnerability was discovered that allowed the acquisition of millions of users’ phone numbers.. Personal data was also obtained during the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data scandal which was used in an attempt to influence the 2016 election.

It is important to stay vigilant with the amount of information you choose to share online. Never assume that your personal data is always protected.

Alon Gal, the CTO of Hudson Rock cybersecurity firm has stated that there wasn’t much Facebook could do since the data has already been released. However, he added that the company could notify users so they are able to prevent future fraud via phishing attacks.
