Digital Forensics Assist Police in Gathering Evidence Against Cybercrime

January 18, 2022

L Anantharam, of The Hans India, recently published an article about ways that digital forensics helps police gather evidence of cybercrimes. Digital Forensics is defined as the disciplines that combine elements of law and computer science to collect and analyze data from computer systems, networks, wireless communications, and storage devices in a way that is admissible as evidence in a court of law.

Just a few ways that digital forensics can aid in police investigations are finding and recovering deleted messages, emails, files, etc., recovering evidence after a hard drive is formatted, or performing an investigation after users hacked into a system. In terms of digital forensics in law enforcement, the main objective is to recover, analyze, and preserve documentation in order to help find criminals.

Both digital forensics and digital investigations don’t apply only to law enforcement, national security, and cyber warfare, but to the private sector as well. They play an important role in civil litigation that helps make companies and the everyday person feel safer.
