Digital Forensics Turns Local Burglary Case into Nationwide Investigation

February 17, 2022

According to a recent article on WIBC.com, the Vanderburgh County Cyber Crime Task Force in Indiana, made a huge discovery that has resulted in a major crack down on a motorcycle theft ring.

It all started in May of 2021, when police arrested six men in connection to a burglary of a Harley-Davidson dealership in Evansville Indiana. As part of the investigation, the men’s phones were seized. Initially the devices were all locked, inhibiting the investigation. According to the Director of the Cyber Crimes Task Force, Jessica Powers, they were able to leverage new techniques to break the passcodes much more quickly than they have in the past, likely using a specialized device such as a GrayKey.

With access to the passcodes and contents of the phones, investigators were not only able to build their case surrounding the Evansville burglary, but also determine that the men were a part of a larger theft ring run by a St. Louis Motorcycle gang. With the data collected from the phones, authorities were able to tie the gang to a number of other break-ins and thefts at other motorcycle dealerships across the country, totaling millions of dollars.
