Ferrari Held Ransom by Cyber Criminals

March 23, 2023

According to a recent article on SecurityMagazine.com , Ferrari, the renowned performance luxury car manufacturer, recently suffered a ransomware attack. The bad actor responsible for the attack demanded a payment in exchange for not releasing private client information.

In response, Ferrari began an investigation, engaging a third-party cybersecurity firm to assist. The company also decided not to pay the ransom demand saying in a statement “As a policy, Ferrari will not be held to ransom as paying such demands funds criminal activity and enables threat actors to perpetuate their attacks.”

Ferrari has also notified its affected customers of the potential data breach. Through analysis of affected systems, they were able to determine that customer information including names, addresses, emails, and telephone numbers, were exposed. At this time the company does not believe payment data or bank account details were compromised.

Ferrari appears to have set a solid example in their handling of this breach. Of course, ideally incidents like this would be avoided – but when they do occur, beginning a though investigation immediately, enlisting the help of outside cybersecurity/digital forensic firms and notifying the appropriate parties will always put you on the right track.  Choosing not to pay a ransom and encouraging further criminal activity is also a great choice.
