Former Probation Officer Convicted

Tia McKenzie multimedia journalist for the WLBT Channel 3 News, recently published an article about a former Mississippi Department of Corrections probation officer being convicted of child sex crimes.

The former probation officer, 48-year-old William Jeffrey Knight, served at police agencies for over 20 years and at the time of his arrest, he was serving as a Lamar County MDOC probation officer.

The Petal Police Department and the Mississippi Digital Forensics Laboratory assisted in the case proving that Knight was guilty. The trial lasted only two days, in which the jury came to a simple verdict.

William Jeffrey Knight was found guilty of two counts of exploitation of a child and one count of touching a child for lustful purposes. He was sentenced to 95 years in prison on a day-to-day sentence.

The 12^th Circuit Court District Attorney, Lin Carter, stated, “No one is above the law. What William Jeffrey Knight did to this 12-year-old child is devastating. He is a child predator that was held accountable. Knight’s 95-year, day-for-day sentence that he received from Judge Bob Helfrich, is the maximum sentence allowed under the law. This sentence reflects the evidence: That Knight systematically groomed and sexually exploited a child in our community.”

Thankfully, the digital forensics team found enough evidence to help Lin Carter prove that Knight was guilty.
