Former Two-Star Air Force General Convicted of Sexual Assault

April 26, 2022

Amy Hudson, of Air Force Magazine, recently reported on the conviction of former Major General William T. Cooley. Cooley, a former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, was convicted of abusive sexual contact stemming from an incident when he forcibly kissed his sister-in-law in August of 2018.

Hudson writes “He was charged with one count of sexual assault under Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, with three specifications.” Cooley’s trial, which began April 18, is the first full court-martial of an Air Force general officer in the history of the military branch.

During the trial, ten witnesses testified, including one digital forensics expert. Evidence presented during the trial included electronic communications such as emails, text messages, and voicemails, which numbered in the hundreds.

Cooley was found guilty on one of the three specifications, and sentencing is set for the week of April 25. Cooley faces up to seven years in jail along with a dismissal from the Air Force and the withholding of pay.
