Over 1 Million Texans may be Impacted by Dental Care Data Breach

March 22, 2022

Sarah Coble, of Infosecurity Magazine, recently published an article about a cyber attack that impacted over 72 Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics offices across the state of Texas.

Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics initially posted a notice on its website in August 2021 and stated, “On or about August 9, 2021, JDC became aware of a malware incident impacting certain company systems. JDC immediately worked to restore its systems and launched an investigation, with assistance from third-party computer forensic specialists, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.”

While they posted the notice in August, they only started notifying impacted patients in January 2022 after launching an investigation. The data that may have been compromised during the attack included dates of birth, health insurance information, clinical information, financial information, driver’s license numbers and even Social Security numbers.

JDC Healthcare Management LLC also said, “While our investigation is ongoing, on August 13, 2021, we determined that certain documents stored within JDC’s environment were copied from or viewed on the system as part of the cyber incident between July 27, 2021, and August 16, 2021.”

The cyber attack was required to be reported to the Texas Attorney General’s Office as a data breach since it affected more than 500 people. The attack impacted up to 1,026,820 Texas residents.

In addition, JDC Healthcare Management LLC stated they did not find any evidence of the exposed data being misused since falling victim to the malware attack.
