ABA TECHSHOW 2020: It’s a Wrap!

Congratulations to ABA TECHSHOW co-chairs Heidi Alexander and Catherine Sanders-Reach! Another fantastic conference is in the history books – and our friends Heidi and Catherine are now official members of the Black Ribbon Club (past chairs of ABA TECHSHOW – we too have black ribbons).

We enjoyed talking to many attendees during the six hours we worked at the conference concierge booth. The attendees are always so enthusiastic – it is inspiring to the speakers. We had four sessions this year – deepfakes, pen testing and policies, famous data breaches and ethics and lawyer wellness – well attended by folks who were obviously deeply interested in the topics.

Thanks to the Legal Talk Network for interviewing uber geek/longtime friend Lincoln Mead and me after our deepfakes session – and thanks to John Simek for being our guest host.

There were too many wonderful sessions to list and applaud, but we did especially enjoy the keynote by Mary Shen O'Carroll, Director, Legal Operations, Technology and Strategy at Google LLC. Though not a lawyer, she painted a clear picture with which we agree. Law firms fall into three buckets – those who are mostly ignoring the future, those who are gingerly trying innovations, and those who are dedicated to immersing their firms in innovation to successfully move into a future where many people/entities (including the accounting Big Four) are offering legal services that are considerably more client-focused than most law firms.

Everyone enjoyed 60 in 60, the annual roundup of tricks, tips, websites etc., delivered with good humor and spanning the horizon from extraordinarily practical tips to tips that made the audience erupt with laughter. Always a great way to wrap up the show.

To our fellow faculty members, thanks for your hard work in preparing – you clearly "delivered the goods" as we heard from all the positive feedback at the concierge booth.

We look forward already to ABA TECHSHOW 2021, under the capable and energetic leadership of Allan Mackenzie and Roberta Tepper. Don't forget to mark your calendars for March 10-13, 2021!
