California State Bar Data Breach: 322,000 Attorney Discipline Records Published Online

May 10, 2022

U.S. News reported on May 8 that the State Bar of California is notifying people impacted by a data breach in which 322,000 attorney disciplinary records were published online. This was not the result of a cyberattack but rather resulted from a security vulnerability in the Bar’s case management system.

The vulnerability resulted in the records being inadvertently collected and published by Judyrecords from October 15, 2021, to February 26, 2022.

This is the first time I’ve heard of a scenario like this one – perhaps another reminder that all legal entities need at least an annual security assessment by an independent third party.
