Gartner Warning: Drop Everything and Secure Remote Access

September 28, 2020

We might not issue quite such a dire warning, but it is true that many law firms and businesses, while they are operating remotely, are not necessarily doing so securely. And with the increase in attacks on home networks to get access to the business network, shoring up your defenses is very much in order.

BANKINFOSECURITY.COM carried a post on September 17 highlighting the advice of Brian Reed, a senior Gartner analyst, who spoke at the recent virtual Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit 2020.

"Securing your mobile workforce has now become the single greatest existential imperative," he said.

His advice? Now is a great time to review existing controls and potentially recalibrate them to ensure employees' productivity isn't being hampered – for example, by struggling with legacy access controls – and also ensure that things aren't too open. Two frequent problems, Reed said, are organizations routing cloud-based application traffic via corporate networks – cue traffic degradation – and not being well prepared to adequately support workers, for example, with zero trust network access and cloud access security brokers.

But make no mistake about it: Reed is right in advising that everyone up their cybersecurity game in this work-from-home world. That is the first priority. A good start is getting a security assessment done, with a strong emphasis on work-from-home issues, so that you can identify and remediate the vulnerabilities that may be uncovered.
