Hacking Groups Take Sides: Russia or Ukraine?

March 1, 2022

The Record reported on February 25 that ransomware gangs and other hacking groups have picked sides in the Russia/Ukraine battle and made them public.

Thus far, and the landscape is changing quickly, Anonymous and Ghostsec announced their support Ukraine.

Siding with Russia are Conti, UNC1151, SandWorm, The Red Bandits, and Coomingproject.

The announcements caused Ukraine’s Defense Ministry to send a message to the Ukrainian underground hacker community. The message encouraged Ukrainian hackers to join together to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure from cyberattacks and act offensively against Russia in cyber espionage operations. Although requested by the Defense Ministry, the message was published by Yegor Aushev, the founder of Cyber Unit Technologies, who provided an application for those in the hacker community to apply.

Bleeping Computer reported on February 26 that Ukraine is recruiting a volunteer “IT army” of security researchers and hackers to conduct cyberattacks on thirty-one Russian entities, including government agencies, critical infrastructure, and banks.

War has traditionally conducted by air, land, sea, and space. If anyone had any doubts, it is now clear war will henceforth always be conducted in part through cyberwarfare.
