The “Great Resignation” Gains Steam as Employers Call Employees Back to Work
July 1, 2021
It doesn’t matter what profession you are in – the impact of the “Great Resignation” is rippling across America.
CNBC reported on June 30 that, instead of returning to the office, employees may quit instead. According to a report by Monster.com, 95% of employees are considering switching jobs.
I would note that there is a big difference between considering and actually quitting. And a lot of economic considerations!
Nonetheless, people are thinking more seriously about what they want their professional life to look like. Some don’t want to commute, at least full time. Some appreciate a hybrid in-office/remote workplace.
The Monster report suggests that 93% of employees are willing to change industries to find the right job. Monster found that burnout and lack of growth opportunities are driving the shift.
A record 4 million people quit their jobs in April alone, according to the Labor Department.
There are a lot of open jobs – the Labor Department reported a record 9.3 million job openings as of the latest tally.
In a survey of more than 350 CEOs and human resources and finance leaders, 70% said they plan to have employees back in the office by the fall of this year (or sooner) according to a report by staffing firm LaSalle Network.
At this point, 9 out of 10 organizations will be combining remote and on-site working, according to a separate McKinsey survey. Most companies, however, haven’t hammered out the specifics of what that will look like.
As I can attest from conversations with my law firm friends, there is much angst and handwringing about how to handle returning to work and possible hybrid office/home arrangements.
