Tiversa: A Cybersecurity Firm’s Fast Rise and Stunning Fall

November 14, 2019

The New Yorker recently carried a fascinating article on the quick rise and stunning collapse of cybersecurity firm Tiversa. Tiversa dominated an emerging online market—before it was accused of fraud, extortion, and manipulating the federal government.

All cybersecurity companies are accused of spreading FUD – fear, uncertainty and doubt. I worry about that so much that I screen every PowerPoint carefully to make sure everything is grounded in facts/statistics from well-respected sources and/or stories that have made headlines in credible media sources.

In some respects, it is the mission of anyone educating audiences on cybersecurity to scare them, It's a frightening world out there. And there's no silver bullet. "Getting to good" is often the best goal a small business can afford – and perfection, even for the well-heeled is unattainable.

But the actions described in this article are beyond belief. We have certainly seen cybersecurity companies who have "sharp practices" and "stretch the truth." But nothing like this story.

This one should be required reading for anyone in the cybersecurity space.
