1Password Now Subscription Only
July 11, 2017
Password managers are a great thing and every user should have one. There are many good password managers available. 1Password is very popular and in wide use by many of my colleagues. When selecting a password manager, one of the decision points is whether to use a cloud-based application like LastPass or one that stores the password vault locally. Motherboard reports that 1Password is now only offering a cloud-based monthly subscription instead of a one-time license. Several security researchers took to Twitter to express their displeasure.
"Unfortunately, 1Password is betraying their users and moving to a subscription-only service. This is unfortunate," tweeted the official account of the Crypto Village, a privacy and encryption workshop. "We cannot recommend them."
I prefer to have control over my password vault as well. If you are a 1Password user that wants a local database option, try eWallet, which is what I use.
