5G or 5GHz – What’s what?

December 19, 2018

For several years you have probably seen references to 5GHz. Recently, there have been many reports of 5G being mentioned. Is that a misspelling or is there a difference? The short answer is that there is a significant difference between 5G and 5GHz. Both are used for wireless connections, but there is nothing else in common between them (other than similar spelling). 5GHz is a frequency used for Wi-Fi networks. 5G is the next generation data network for cellular connections. 5G is designed to be much faster and have lower latency than 4G LTE. You should start to see devices and networks from the cellular carriers supporting 5G in 2019. Read this post to get more detail about the differences between the wireless networks.
