Android 8: Official Name is Oreo

August 22, 2017

The rumors are over. Google has announced the name of the latest Android operating system and it's Oreo. TechCrunch has listed what's new in Oreo.

  • Notification Dots – Just like iOS, Oreo will show a little dot in the top right corner of the app's icon to represent a notification.
  • Picture-in-picture – You will be able to minimize a video while you perform other tasks. You will be able to move the PiP window around on the screen to the best postion.
  • Autofill – Apps can now automatically fill in user information like user name, password (such as coming from a password manager) and e-mail address.
  • New Emojis – there are 60 new emojis with the new release. What if the recipient isn't running Oreo? I'm sure you won't be able to "decode" the new emojis.
  • New Setting screen – Simpler menu structure that isn't divided into separate groups.
  • Instant Apps enabled by default – Instant Apps allow developers to chop up their apps into smaller pieces that can run instantly, with just a click. There's no need to install anything.
  • Faster boot speed – Boot speed twice as fast as a Pixel.
  • Security – Hardened security, improved encryption and Google Play Protect.

The big question is when will your phone get the Oreo update? Google phones will be the first to get Oreo. The distribution is dependent on your cellular carrier, but the newer models should get the update before the end of the year.
