Apple Caught Saving User Data without Permission Again

February 13, 2017

Computer forensics company Elcomsoft warned that Apple has been saving Safari browser history for over a year even though users believed they deleted their history. It's not the first time Apple has been outed for collecting user information without their knowledge. You may recall when Apple stored a user's GPS information on their mobile device for a very long time. That practice has since been stopped. Apparently, Elcomsoft discovered that Apple was storing the deleted Safari browser history in iCloud. Even Apple's privacy statement states "Apple does not retain deleted content once it is cleared from Apple's servers." Elcomsoft proved that is not a true statement. If you don't use iCloud to synchronize data across multiple devices, you were not at risk. After Elcomsoft forced Apple to look behind the curtain, Safari history is now wiped if it is more than two weeks old.
