Backdoor Access for Seagate Wireless Drives

September 8, 2015

What are they thinking? Some models of Seagate wireless drives come with something you didn’t intend to purchase. A backdoor to access your data.  According to a study by security researchers at Tangible Security, there is a secret backdoor for telnet services with a hard-coded password. The access uses a default user name and password of “root.” The affected devices include:

  • Seagate Wireless Plus Mobile Storage
  • Seagate Wireless Mobile Storage (Wirelessly streaming your tablet and smartphone’s data)
  • LaCie FUEL (Wirelessly extending storage for iPads)

The fix is pretty easy. Just update the firmware on the device to version 3.4.1.105.
