Ding Dong the Witch is Dead and so is Flash in 2020
July 26, 2017
Adobe's Flash has had a rocky road for a long time. Criticism about security and performance have continued to plague usage of Flash. Adobe has now announced that it will end support of the Flash player in 2020. Many developers are saying it's about time. I'm all about dumping products that create a security risk for users. However, I'm afraid we'll be stuck with Flash long after 2020. The primary reason is that vendors developed software, based on Flash, to manage devices and the software was never updated to versions using other technologies.
As an example, you may have to use a software application to manage your phone system that is based on Flash. There's nothing wrong with your phone system and it would cost a boatload of money to upgrade the system just to get a management platform that is not Flash based. Do you know what a business would do? Keep the phone system and one legacy computer to run Flash. That means you'll have at least one machine with unsupported Flash and an unsupported operating system. So much for retiring unsupported software.
