Don’t Throw Away Those Snack Bags – Recycle Them as Faraday Bags

November 30, 2017

It isn't always the stuff from Hollywood. If you have ever seen the movie Enemy of the State, but there is a scene where Gene Hackman takes Will Smith's cell phone and puts it in a foil lined potato chip bag to block the cell phone signal. Surprise, surprise, but it actually works. In the real world, Ars Technica reported that a 60-year-old electrician in Perth, Western Australia (Tom Colella) put his employer-provided personnel digital assistant in mylar and foil snack bags in order to stop the GPS tracking. Apparently, he would do this when he wanted to play a round of golf and did so 140 times. His employer was not amused. His employment was terminated because it actually worked.

We use Faraday bags and have a Faraday box to block cellular signals when we deal with mobile device forensics in our lab. I don't think our clients would appreciate Cheetos crumbs on their cell phones so we'll stick with the Faraday box.
