Google to Rollout Alternative to Two-Step Verification SMS Codes
July 17, 2017
The bad guys are hijacking user's phone numbers to receive one-time codes via SMS in order to break into their accounts. As a result, Google is offering user's an alternative to SMS codes. Instead of having to type in a code at login, Google Prompt pops up a notification on authorized mobile devices with information about a login attempt, including what device it's coming from. All you have to do is tap a button to authorize the login request. You are required to have access to the Internet in order to use the new system.
The migration will only be offered to SMS-based two-step verification users and is completely optional. Security keys are considered a more secure solution and those users will not be offered to switch. The system is built-in to Android devices, but iOS users will need to have the Google Search app installed.
