Hope for CryptoLocker Victims
August 8, 2014
Security company FireEye, in partnership with Fox IT, announced decryption assistance for those users infected with the original CryptoLocker ransomware. Ransomware has been a growing form of malware that encrypts a user’s data, making it inaccessible until a ransom fee is paid to the entity distributing the malware. Essentially, your data is held hostage until you pay the ransom.
The good news is the FireEye and Fox IT have created a webpage where you can upload an encrypted CryptoLocker file and get a key to decrypt the data. The site also has instructions on how to use the provided key to unlock the rest of your data. This is great for those that were infected with the original version of CryptoLocker and didn’t pay the ransom fee. However, there are many variants of the original ransomware so you may not be totally out of the woods.
