Internet Explorer Replacement Has an Official Name

April 30, 2015

The replacement for the “dead” Internet Explorer is no longer called Project Spartan. Windows 10 will be released with a new browser and the real name for the next-generations browser will be called Microsoft Edge. Edge represents an entirely new browser for Microsoft, but will still carry the familiar ‘e’ logo that Explorer users have seen for years. According to Ars Technica, “One of the new features is the New Tab page, which displays your top pages, apps associated with those pages, a handful of featured apps and some other material based on information you’ve given to Cortana.”

Another major feature is Web Extensions, which are browser extension written in HTML and JavaScript. This will allow extensions for other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox to be ported to Edge with very little effort or modification. Some commentators have even said that Edge can “steal” Chrome and Firefox extensions.
