Microsoft Announces a New Surface Model

April 1, 2015

We absolutely love Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3. It truly is a laptop replacement, but some complain that the pricing is a bit steep for their blood. Not to worry. Microsoft has just announced a new model called the Surface 3. It is supposed to be the same design and materials as the Pro 3, but with a price of $499. That should be a happier price point for a lot of consumers. On the Surface blog, it is described as “It is thin (just 8.7 mm) and light (1.37 pounds or 622 grams) and has a 10.8-inch screen. Compared to the 12-inch Surface Pro 3 it is slightly smaller and it feels great when you’re using it as a tablet.”

It comes with Windows 8.1 and will be upgradable to Windows 10 when it launches later this year. There will be two choices of configurations. There is a 64GB model with 2GB of RAM and a 128GB version with 4GB of RAM, which is $100 more than the the $499 entry price. Just like the Pro 3, no cover or keyboard is included in the base units, so plan on spending an additional $130 for the required accessory.

The Surface 3 will be available in 26 markets by May 7th. I think I’ll make a trip to a Microsoft store to check one out since demo units are supposed to arrive on April 1st. I just hope it’s not a Microsoft April Fools’ joke.
