Multiple User Profiles on Android

November 28, 2017

If you are a Windows user, you are probably pretty familiar with the ability to define multiple users to a single device. Android has the same ability, but not many people know about it. Typically, you would have one device per user, but you can set up Android to work just like a Windows system. There is a downside to creating multiple profiles…performance. Your device will slow down with each profile that is configured. This is because all the profiles are running at the same time to facilitate rapid switching between profiles.

It's fairly easy to create multiple profiles if you are running Lollipop or above. Pull down the notification tab and select the gear icon to get to settings. On Android Nougat and below, scroll down to the "Users" entry. On Oreo, it's "Users & Accounts." Tap new user and follow the prompts. The option to add multiple profiles may not be available on all Android devices. As an example, Samsung removes the option from its devices.
