Over 75% of WordPress Sites Not Being Backed Up

March 11, 2015

According to a recent survey by CodeGuard, more than three-quarters of organizations and bloggers are not running a backup plugin on WordPress websites. It would have been nicer if they had surveyed more than 503 users, but the percentage is still telling. The other issue is that most hosting providers have no guarantee for any type of backup. The hosting provider is only interested in recovery of the environment for major catastrophic failures. They could care less about the content of individual websites.

Typically, those that are backing up their sites tend to store the backup data on the same server that hosts their site. Not a good thing. It would be better to transfer the data to another location. Perhaps cloud-based storage would be a better solution. It’s not just about protecting the site content. The average WordPress website has between 10 and 20 plugins, which are frequently updated. Having a regularly scheduled backup process will help maintain the plugins too.
