Should Lawyers be Using Practice Management Software?

September 2, 2015

Last year I wrote about how clients are finding lawyers on the Internet. Software Advice, a legal software research firm, has released another survey looking at legal management software. Legal management software is probably better known as case management software or practice management software among most lawyers. It’s the key software to organize your practice. Some of the major findings include:

  1. The most used features are those that automate tasks such as calendaring and scheduling functions, recording billable time and capturing communications such as phone and e-mail messages.
  2. The majority of users say there is a positive impact in organizing the information for their matters, improving workflow and capturing billable time.
  3. Challenges include integration with other software, ability to customize and the intuitiveness of the user interface.

None of these findings surprise me. We service a lot of law firms and it still amazes us that more firms are not using some sort of case management software despite the obvious benefits documented by studies such as the one referenced.
