Support for IE 8, 9 & 10 Ends

January 7, 2016

I'm not sure how many people are actually using IE these days, but Microsoft will officially stop supporting Internet Explorer 8, 9 & 10 on January 12, 2016. This means that users will have to upgrade to IE 11 or move to Windows 10 and the Edge browser. The problem is that a lot of vendors have software configuration applications that are coded for specific versions of the Internet Explorer browser. The HTML-based management utilities just won't work with Chrome or Firefox. We have several pieces of equipment that require us to use an unsupported IE browser to manage the device. How do we deal with this? I have a dedicated laptop that has the required unsupported IE browser sitting on my shelf in my bookcase (yes, they still make furniture to hold books). It is only powered up and connected when I need to access the equipment.

If (God forbid) you are using IE as your default browser, it's time to change to Chrome or Firefox. The Explorer browser in Windows 10 won't cut it for managing some of your existing equipment so you should probably keep a legacy device on the shelf like I do.
