Windows 10 Update Turns on Spying Again – Turn it Off

December 2, 2015

The first major update for Windows 10 was recently released. Plan on spending at least 30 minutes for the download and multiple reboots to get the update installed. After spending all that energy to install the update, data may once again be sent to Microsoft even if you previously disabled privacy settings. Microsoft renamed DiagTrack to Connected User Experiences and Telemetry Service, which sends data to Microsoft’s servers. Not to worry…BGR has instructions on how to disable this background service.

  • Hold down the Windows key and hit R
  • Type ‘services.msc’ in the box that appears and hit the Enter key
  • In the ‘Services (Local)’ section, find the Connected User Experiences and Telemetry service and double-click it
  • In the ‘Services status’ click the ‘Stop’ button
  • Change the ‘Startup type’ to ‘Disabled’ and click the ‘OK’ button

It seems like Microsoft may be taking a page from the Facebook playbook by resetting privacy and security settings after an update.
