You Really Should Defrag Your Solid State Drive

December 9, 2014

I was fascinated to stumble across a blog post by Scott Hanselman covering the details of solid state drive defragmentation. Conventional wisdom has always cautioned against defragging SSDs and that doing so could actually damage the drives. Scott goes into great detail about the technical issues of using Windows to defrag your SSD. In fact, Windows automatically does defrag your drive on a periodic basis.

No matter what you’ve been told in the past, defragging your SSD is a good thing and should be done. I for one will be changing my drive maintenance routine.
