You Should Always Change the Defaults – Even the Alexa Wake Word

January 18, 2017

One of the simplest, no cost things you can do to improve your security posture is to change any default value. This means changing the default user ID, password, network name or any other item that is changeable. But don't just consider changing the values for your network devices and computers – you should also change the default wake word for Alexa. The unfortunate reality is that Amazon only gives you four choices when changing the default Alexa wake word. You are limited to choosing between "Alexa", "Computer", "Amazon", or "Echo". Several publications have reported that Amazon is working to allow custom wake words, but who knows for sure? CNET has the instructions for changing the wake word and the device name.
