SHARON NELSON PARTICIPATES IN “THOUGHT LEADER” PANEL

January 15, 2015

Recently, TechnoLawyer’s LitigationWorld tackled the issue of litigation growth. A panel of seven thought leaders were asked this question: In your opinion, what was the most significant trend in litigation practice in the United States in 2014?

Sensei’s Sharon Nelson was one of those thought leaders and here is her response:

Recently, IBM announced that Watson will enter the legal market. I think this will have a profound effect on large firms with a strong possibility that Watson’s extraordinary artificial intelligence will replace humans at an ever-increasing rate. Watson can do the legal research and analysis in near real-time, can predict outcomes (should you settle or go full steam ahead?), and search vast amounts of data to determine the probable budget for a case.

The list of Watson’s capabilities goes on and on, but I believe Watson is a much greater danger to legal jobs, especially those of associates and support personnel, than Legal Zoom and its brethren. On the other hand, he will afford tremendous efficiencies to law firms, perhaps making them infinitely more competitive — but with fewer “carbon units.”
