While law firms may not be directly targeted by an increase of cyberattacks spurred by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, its impact will likely be felt far and wide within the legal industry.

Much of the nature of war has shifted from armies on traditional battlefields to something a little less violent, but still insidious: cyberwarfare. 

Recently, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has set off alarm bells of cyberattacks against critical infrastructure in Eastern Europe. This week has seen everyone from President Joe Biden to the National Security Advisor to cybersecurity providers instructing companies to safeguard their data and information technology assets. 

For U.S. law firms, an increased threat of cyberattacks and data breaches, whether from Russia or other bad actors using the conflict as an opportunity, may be inevitable. Unfortunately, cybersecurity experts don’t think most of the legal sector is prepared for what is likely to come.

To be sure, the president and vice president of cybersecurity firm Sensei, Sharon Nelson and John Simek, respectively, noted that current cyberattack activity is “normal.”
