Read Receipts are Especially Annoying

January 11, 2021

One of the most annoying things about using Microsoft Office is read receipts. I've always wondered why people insist on getting notice that I've actually read a message. Don't they know that you don't have to send confirmation and can just ignore the request? Therefore, there never is any proof that you actually read a message.

Since many of us are still working from home, we are participating in a lot of virtual meetings. I was thrilled to see a post on How-To Geek with instructions for turning off read receipts and to stop sending read requests in Microsoft Teams. To turn off read receipts in Teams, click on your profile picture and select Settings. Select the Privacy settings and uncheck "Read receipts." To avoid sending the read receipt requests, Get to the Settings again by clicking on your profile picture. Instead of Privacy, select the Navigation menu choice and click the Edit button in the lower right corner. Set @mentions to Banner and feed. Also set Replies to Banner.
