Tips for Strong Passwords

December 3, 2020

While there are many efforts to implement a passwordless authentication system such as biometrics or tokens, we're not there yet. Passwords will be with us for the foreseeable future. That means we should be vigilant in creating passwords that are strong. TechRepublic has a post with five tips for creating strong passwords.

  1. 10 characters minimum
  2. Break up common words with random characters
  3. Use a number
  4. Capitalize at random
  5. Use a password manager

I know the NIST recommendation for password length is 8 or more characters so 10 might sound acceptable as a tip. However, I would suggest a minimum of 14 characters to make it even more impervious to being cracked. I've said it before and I'll say it again (not for the last time), use a password manager NOW!
