Tips to Up Your Home Wi-Fi Security Game
November 30, 2020
Many of us are still working from home and will continue to do so through a large part of 2021. The cybercriminals know that too and are actively attacking home networks. The goal in attacking your home devices is to use them as jumping points to get to the business network. The truth is that home networks are less secure than business networks and are centered around consumer grade technology. However, you can do some things to make sure your home Wi-Fi network is a bit more secure.
Naked Security has a post that lists five simple things to check on your home Wi-Fi. Of course, you should always make sure your devices have the latest updates installed. Make sure you are at least using WPA2 for your Wi-Fi encryption. Don't use WEP or even WPA. Change the password used for administration of the router and connecting to the Wi-Fi network to something a lot more complex than a short simple one. Take an inventory of devices connected to your network and investigate any suspicious ones. Don't forget about your IoT devices either. They need to be updated and preferably only connected to a guest network.
I would also add disabling any remote administrator of your router. You don't want to give the cybercriminals any additional opportunity to access your network from the internet. Consider upgrading your Wi-Fi router to one that supports WPA3 encryption. As an example, the eero 6 is a Wi-Fi 6 router, but WPA3 is not enabled by default. You need to go Discover -> eero Labs -> WPA3 to enable it.
