Paranoid Video Conferencing User get Zoom End-to-End Encryption

October 15, 2020

OK, not everyone is paranoid about securing their video conferencing communications, but apparently the whole world is obsessed with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). So let's get to it. Since the majority of us have been capitulated into a virtual world, video conferencing is the now the norm. For those that don't know, Webex is the only current video conferencing platform that has E2EE. Not for long. Zoom has just announced in a blog post that the first phase of its E2EE implementation will start next week.

For the next 30 days, Zoom is asking for your feedback concerning the E2EE rollout. The first phase of the rollout is available to everyone. It should be noted that Zoom uses GCM encryption for all meetings, but now the encryption keys will be generated by the host instead of having the Zoom servers having control. However, all things come at a cost. If you enable E2EE, you can't do some things. As an example, there are some limitations such as "you won't have access to join before host, cloud recording, streaming, live transcription, Breakout Rooms, polling, 1:1 private chat, and meeting reactions."

At the end of the day, there is always a balance of security over convenience.
