Survey Says – Gen Z and Millennials are a Security Risk

The human factor is in the news again. CSO reported that according to an EY survey, younger workers are more prone to have sloppy cybersecurity practices. “The survey suggests that despite understanding the need for security measures, younger, digitally native workers were significantly more likely to disregard mandatory IT updates for as long as possible (58% for Gen Z and 42% for millennials vs. 31% for Gen X and 15% for baby boomers). They were also more likely to use the same password for professional and personal accounts (30% for Gen Z and 31% for millennials vs. 22% for Gen X and 15% for baby boomers).”

Perhaps the digital natives have developed their practices because they have no experience with a world before constant data breaches. In other words, they believe data breaches are inevitable no matter what is done. Employers are struggling with how to deal with a younger workforce and their cybersecurity practices. Employee education is certainly a good first step. “The survey found that respondents who received cybersecurity training relevant to their role in the past year were significantly more likely to implement cyber-safe practices at work than those who had received no education for more than a year.” At least the survey supports the effectiveness of training.
