No More Laser Printers from Epson

December 1, 2022

Ars Technica posted that Epson will no longer manufacture laser printers starting in 2026. The company will only sell inkjet printers at that time. Epson believes inkjet printing is “greener” and better for the environment. Epson stated, “As a company we’re totally committed to sustainable innovation and action, and inkjets simply use less energy and fewer consumable parts. While laser printers work by heating and fusing toner to a page, Epson’s Heat-Free inkjet technology consumes less electricity by using mechanical energy to fire ink onto the page.”

Hmm. Not so sure about that. There are plenty of studies documenting the impact of waste for ink cartridges and the throwaway mentality. The cost per page is also higher for inkjet printers. Consumer Reports found that laser printers are more reliable and faster. Perhaps it’s the pressure of competition from HP and Brother that influenced the decision to drop the laser line. Let’s just hope Epson doesn’t decide to resurrect the dot matrix printer models of days past.
