Transcribe Audio Files in Microsoft Word
December 13, 2022
Many users know that Microsoft Word can transcribe speech to text by using the Dictate function. However, Word can also transcribe an audio file too. BGR has a post with the detailed instructions for performing the transcription function. You won’t find the feature in the desktop version of Word. It is only available in the cloud version of Word for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Logon to your Microsoft 365 account by going to office.com and open a new Word document. If you don’t see a Dictate icon in the ribbon, click the three dots to expose more items. Select the Transcribe menu choice. Select the Upload audio button to import a file for transcription. Find the file (.wav, .mp4, .m4a or .mp3) to transcribe and watch the magic happen. You can add the text conversion to your document as plain text or include speaker names and timestamps too. You may have to do some minor editing, but the transcription does a pretty good job in my experience.
