FBI Advice – Don’t Save Passwords in a Browser
March 12, 2020
We've been giving this recommendation for years. It is very convenient to have your browser remember logon credentials, but do you really know what is happening with the stored data? You've probably accepted the security setting allowing a browser add-on to access your password vault. It's not just us. Softpedia reported that the FBI recommends the same thing. The FBI also recommends disabling autofill, deleting browser history and block any cookies and ad trackers from third parties. Browser extensions can collect data and spy on a user's activity.
The FBI stated, "Some browsers support add-ons or plug-ins, which can handle some of these functions even better than the browser itself. There are many add-ons available that warn about malicious sites and content, block collection of certain information, and clear your browser of cookies. Before installing add-ons, though, do some research to check for any negative reports about the add-ons' performance."
