There is No Excuse to Have an Insecure Website

March 3, 2020

You need to have a digital certificate in order to create a secure website and support HTTPS. The digital certificates are issued by Certificate Authorities (CA). Depending on the type of digital certificate you need, the cost could be rather high for a small business, but you don't have to pay any longer. Let's Encrypt distributes free digital certificates to secure your website. According to Naked Security post, Let's Encrypt has issued its one billionth free certificate. The certificates are valid for 90 days before being forced to renew them. Renewal is not a problem as Let's Encrypt developed a protocol called Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME) that "…is a challenge-response system that automates enrollment with the certificate authority and validation of the domain."

The free certificates only validate control of a domain and do not provide extended validation for other features such as e-commerce sites. More and more browsers now warn if you visit a site that isn't secure with HTTPS and may even block access in the future. There's no excuse to have an insecure website these days.
