Wi-Fi 6 – Killer Network
August 28, 2019
All the recent news is about the rollout of 5G wireless networks. 5G cellular networks are faster than 4G, but they also come at a cost. As an example, Verizon is charging a premium for connecting to 5G. Forget about 5G connections and look to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6. By now your head is probably ready to explode. What's the difference between 5G and Wi-Fi 6? 5G is the cellular connection and Wi-Fi 6 is the wireless network connection, which will have a much bigger impact on connectivity. Previous to the numbering of Wi-Fi standards, there was an alphabet soup of letters following 802.11.
CNET has a good post describing the differences with different Wi-Fi numbers. Basically, Wi-Fi 5 is 802.11ac and Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax. In other words, the numbering scheme is easier to remember than the alphabet soup designations. Bottom line … Wi-Fi 6 is better connectivity. Qualcomm has already shipped 4 billion Wi-Fi chips to support Wi-Fi 6. You will have to upgrade your wireless device to take advantage of Wi-Fi 6. Samsung Galaxy S10 phones already support the Wi-Fi 6 connections.
