ASUS Routers: Update Firmware or Block Traffic
June 21, 2023
If you are using an ASUS router, pay attention. Some models of ASUS routers need some immediate attention. Naked Security has a post explaining the warning ASUS issued to users of its home routers. The advice is to update the firmware as soon as possible or block any incoming traffic. The expectation is that attackers will be actively scanning for impacted devices since there is a long list of fixes included in the update. The impacted router models include the following:
- GT6
- GT-AXE16000
- GT-AX11000 PRO
- GT-AXE11000
- GT-AX6000
- GT-AX11000
- GS-AX5400
- GS-AX3000
- XT9
- XT8
- XT8 V2
- RT-AX86U PRO
- RT-AX86U
- RT-AX86S
- RT-AX82U
- RT-AX58U
- RT-AX3000
- TUF-AX6000
- TUF-AX5400
If you are a little nervous about doing a firmware update, ASUS gives you a “temporary” alternative. Please note, if you choose not to install this new firmware version, we strongly recommend disabling services accessible from the WAN side to avoid potential unwanted intrusions. These services include remote access from WAN, port forwarding, DDNS, VPN server, DMZ, port trigger. Item #7 in this support document gives you instructions for disabling the WAN access.
