As law firms rely on shared workspaces like WeWork during office moves or as cost-cutting measures, cybersecurity professionals say there are vital steps to protecting themselves in the unfamiliar location.

Of course, in Squire’s case, the cybersecurity odds might have been in their favor. Not only is it a large firm with a strong budget for cybersecurity, but WeWork itself is an experienced shared working space, Sharon Nelson and John Simek, the president and vice president of Sensei Enterprises respectively, told Legaltech News.

“In this particular example [Squire], it would not surprise me if the firm being as large as they are negotiated some custom arrangements for that space. And I would have certainly recommended that you do that,” Simek said. “They would also have to be particularly careful because they have so many clients and so many conflicts. I mean, you’ve got an ethical rule to do that, as well as Rule 1.1, which demands competence with technology. So you can’t just say, Well, I didn’t know this.”
