8 Tips for Securing Mobile Devices

March 28, 2023

Mobile devices are the primary computing technology for the majority of people. It seems that everyone has a smartphone attached to their hip or protruding from a rear pants pocket. These small mobile devices need to be secured to protect our privacy and access to data. Tripwire has a post with 8 tips to secure your mobile device for 2023.

  1. Use strong passwords/biometrics
  2. Ensure public or free Wi-Fi is protected
  3. Utilize a VPN
  4. Encrypt your device
  5. Install an Antivirus application
  6. Update to the latest software
  7. Be discerning
  8. Keep backups

It’s pretty easy to accomplish all of these suggestions. Configuring a lock code (password/biometric) for your device will encrypt the contents. I would recommend using a password instead of a PIN or biometrics to protect your phone. Passwords are stronger than PINs and you can be forced to have your fingerprint or face used to unlock the device. While you are at it, configure a timeout so the device automatically locks after a period of inactivity. There are some additional steps you should perform as well.

  • Avoid using autofill
  • Log out
  • Use only trusted stores
  • Enable tracking
